Consider my position: Black, decently-educated, and hard working. One might think that the last two are keys to some degree of success-and they are-but they are invalidated at least partly by the first. I would be remiss if I attempted to twist my mouth in a way that derided my Blackness, but I would also understand the attempt completely. The meritorious and prideful points of my culture are disjointed fodder mainly, and where they are significant, I would be equally enamored by these points should my skin be a couple shades lighter. Indeed, success in a society largely controlled by people different than myself becomes a tenuous thought. The room in the fold that remains for decently-educated, hard-working individuals only reveals itself temporarily and when it does, those preoccupied with the contrast of their appearance will often miss the opportunity to step inside.
